On a weekly basis we get calls or emails from writers wondering if their work (manuscript) is in good enough shape to submit to publishers. Because of this demand, we began offering a manuscript/project evaluation service. This is a valuable service for authors that have never been published and are considering either self-publishing or submitting their work to a traditional press. You can choose from two different services: Sample Manuscript Evaluation; and Complete Manuscript/Project Evaluation. Should you, after receiving your evaluation, choose to publish with either of our self-publishing imprints Alliance Books or the Christian imprint Diakonia Publishing, we will apply $100 toward any publishing package you purchase.
Sample Manuscript Evaluation This service is great for authors with works "in-progress" and a desire to receive feedback on what they've written thus far. Or, you may use this service for a manuscript that is complete, but want only a representative portion evaluated. We provide the same type of feedback (although at a smaller scale and in more general terms) as you would get in the Complete evaluation. Send us no more than five (5) sample chapters from your book (always include the opening chapter); a synopsis of your book (similar to what you would read on a book jacket); and for non-fiction books, a table of contents.
Complete Manuscript/Project Evaluation A Harlan Publishing manuscript evaluation is an in-depth analysis/evaluation that includes reading for grammar, content flow, structure and marketing potentials. Observations are made as to what manuscript weaknesses exist, and then recommendations are noted for suggested correction and changes. Each analysis/critique focuses on many different aspects of proper writing and storytelling.
An examination is made to:
1. Ensure good organization:
A. Evaluate the manuscript's message.
B. Examine text flow and story consistency.
2. To point out the elements of a weak manuscript:
A. No central theme
B. Abrupt ending
C. Rambling thoughts
D. Repetition
E. Uniform sentence length
F. Irrelevant statements, ideas, etc.
G. Too general, lacks focus
H. Idea needs expanding
I. Needs to show not tell
J. Lacks reader application
K. Too wordy--needs tightening up
L. Poor characterization
3. To point out the elements of a strong manuscript:
A. Well written
B. Interesting approach
C. Refreshing idea that will appeal broadly
D. Good use of language
E. Good writing style
F. Clarity
G. Good Characterization
Manuscript/Project Evaluations are done by the editorial staff at Harlan Publishing. If you feel your manuscript needs a thorough examination and evaluation before submitting it to publishers, (or just for printing), we invite you to consider this valuable service. The Sample Evaluation process takes approximately 2-3 weeks while the Complete Evaluation takes approximately 6-8 weeks.
